Training and Capacity Building

One of UNESCO Chair in Water Resources (UNESCO-CWR) main themes is  developing human skills and associated infrastructures within the water resources  community to ensure that water professionals have the skills, knowledge, structures and resources to realize their full potential and achieve sustainable development.

This is envisioned through:-

·        National & Regional short courses

·        Master degree programs

·        Ph.D. degree programs

·        Exchange of good experience through Networks

M.Sc. Programmes

There are systematic programmes geared to acquisition of Maters degree in water resources by course work supplemented by dissertation or by research (thesis).

UNESCO-CWR initiated two Masters programmes of the first type (course work and dissertation) namely:

·        Hydrology masters programme

·        Water Resources Development and Management Programme (WRDM)

A third programme in which environmental aspects were addressed is at the development stage.

Hydrology Programme
The programme offers unique opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge in the field of water resources. It exposes and introduces the candidates to modern methods and techniques of analysis, synthesis and monitoring and bring them in contact with related technical problems and the ways of alleviating or combating them.

The targeted groups in the hydrology programme are civil engineers and related disciplines interest to get specialized in hydrology. The basic requirement is first degree (B.Sc.) in civil engineering or related disciplines.

The first intake to this programme started in the academic year 2000-2001. The annual intake increased steadily from 6 students in the academic year 2000-2001 to twelve in the academic year 2003-2004 and jumped to 15 students in 2005/2006

WRDM Progamme

Programme Structure
The full M.Sc. programme is structured to take two academic years (18 months). The first year comprised of two semesters 15 weeks each during at least 10 courses were taught. The second year is dedicated for research work the outcome of which is consolidated in form of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the M.Sc. degree in hydrology.

The academic year normally starts in the first week of April. For details of the time schedules see Schedules.

Fees
The fees are grouped into two categories according to the nationalities. Local citizens have different fees from that of foreigners.

Please accommodation and living expenses were not included in the fees. Candidates should arrange for these aspects on their own. However, UNESCO-CWR may help in finding a suitable accommodation for the candidates.

 Application
Application forms are available for downloads. Interested candidates can download the application forms, fill them carefully and send them by ordinary mail or electronic mail to the coordinator research and capacity building.

Schedule
For successful applications and subsequently successful study the following deadlines must be met.

Application is open by first July and ends by October 31st. successful applicants will be notified by December 31st> Studies starts the first week of April.

Water Resources Development and Management Program
The programme offers unique opportunity for relevant B.Sc. holders to enhance their knowledge in the field of water resources. It exposes and introduces the candidates to modern methods and techniques of analysis, synthesis and monitoring and bring them in contact with related technical problems and the ways of alleviating or combating them.

The targeted groups in this programme are engineers, scientists, agriculture and other related disciplines interested to get specialized in water resources development and management. The basic requirement is first degree (B.Sc.) in one of the above stated disciplines.

The intake to this programme started in the academic year 2002-2003 by enrolling the 20 students. The programme is three years old now and proved to be very successful.

Programme Structure
The full M.Sc. programme is structured to take two academic years (18 months). The first year comprised of two semesters 15 weeks each during at least 10 courses were taught. The second year is dedicated for research work the outcome of which is consolidated in form of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the M.Sc. degree in water resources development and management.

The academic year normally starts in the first week of April. For details of the time schedules see Schedules.

Higher Diploma
Recently UNESCO-CWR managed to establish a programme leading to higher diploma in water resources development. The target group in this programme are water resources professional with basically general B.Sc. or diploma (undergraduate) and at least three years of experience in the field of water resources to have a chance to upgrade themselves.

The programme is structured to take two academic years followed by a research phase to be consolidate in a form of thesis.

The 1st intake to this programme started in the academic year 2006-2007 and more than 40 professional were enrolled.

Masters Degree by Thesis
This programme aims at giving the opportunity to those who want to acquire a master degree but they do not have time for full time candidature due their busy work schedule. It also aims at giving the same opportunities to the other specializations relevant to water resources development and management such as law, economics, statisticians, etc. These candidates can register for M.Sc. by thesis.

Ph.D. Programme
The Ph.D. programme of the UNESCO-CWR started officially in the year 2000 by registering three Ph.D. students. The number of registered Ph.D. students now reached 9.and some students finished their studies in the academic year 2003-2004.

Consultancy
UNESCO-CWR provides scientific advise through consultancy services and feasibility studies in the areas of its specialization to meet the need for such services. As an example the UNESCO-CWR performed the following consultancies (click on the links for abstract)

·        Protection and development of Nile shores in Khartoum Centre

·        Comprehensive study to mitigate River Gash Flooding

·        Groundwater encyclopedia in Sudan

·        Comprehensive study for non-Nile water resource in Sudan

·        Water resources development in Southern Darfur

·        Drinking water supply for Bahr Elgazzal

·        Sabaloga Dam on the main Nile

·        Delta formation south Aswan High Dam in Sudan Territory

·        Akrib Dam on Atbara River

Short non-degree Courses
These non degree courses aim at giving the civil service workers working with governmental and private sectors a chance of acquaintance with the current scientific innovations to make use of them in their work areas. These courses have their importance in exchanging experiences, inoculation of ideas and Technology transfer. Click on procurement to see the available courses.
