Abstract:

Irrigated agriculture sector plays an important role in the Sudan economy.  Among all the agriculture projects, Gezira Scheme  (GS) represent the topmost priority in conducting scientific research to investigate the problem and difficulties facing irrigation water practices sin the Sudan.  The reason behind the selection of GS as an area for the research is stemming from the location of GS in Sudan national economy map.  It is the Sudan’s economy backbone, if not all, most of the other schemes were designed similar to GS.

The primary objective of this research is to insight into the irrigation water practices and management system to  assess and evaluate the irrigation water practice in the Sudan to increase the irrigation efficiency through non-structural means.

This study concluded and summarized the irrigation water constraints and difficulties in the following:

Lack of coordination cooperation and communication between the irrigation water management partners, (BIs, and farmers).

Failure of SGB to integrate the need and requirements of their  activities with the irrigation water supplied and delivered by MIWR.

Lack of proper maintenance of canals.

Lack of awareness among farmers about the value and use of water resources.

To improve the IW management in GS, the researcher recommended that proper management, close harmony and communication between partners (IEs, BIs and farmers) during decision-making process of irrigation water,……… e.t.c.  are of a paramount importance.
